She uses it to get what she wants and counts it as one of her talents. The thing is, though, that Lucy likes it when guys pay attention to her sex appeal. Technically, she shouldn’t be sexualized at all, but the first thing the readers see her as is a sexual object. We later learn that she is only 17 years old, still a minor. She’s wearing a top that shows off her cleavage and a mini mini-skirt. When Mashima introduces Lucy, she’s using her sex appeal to try and get a discount on a magical key. In this post, I’ll only be talking about Lucy, the main character of the story. This series will always have a place in my heart, but I feel it’s necessary to point out that writing female characters the way Mashima does is…not the best. But I’ve learned a lot since I purchased Volume 1 in 2008, and I was surprised at some things that I didn’t catch when I was younger. I love Fairy Tail it’s the shonen of my childhood the way Naruto or Bleach is for others. There are a lot of jokes that revolve around a woman’s sex appeal and lines that treat women as objects. They come off as these strong, capable people, but they are also sexualized quite often. I only had time to read over the first 3 volumes, and while the stories are just as outrageous and fun as I remember them, the way Mashima writes his female characters leaves me uneasy. However, with the series finale coming up, I thought it’d be nice to revisit it. I stopped buying the books around Volume 50 or so. It’s been a while since I’ve read Fairy Tail.
